Council Election 2016
Local council elections happen every four years on the fourth Saturday in October. The next council general elections are Saturday 22 October 2016.
Information about the role and governance framework of local government is available from the Know Your Council website.
The Surf Coast Shire is divided into four wards.
- Torquay Ward (four councillors)
- Winchelsea Ward (two councillors)
- Anglesea Ward (two councillors)
- Lorne Ward (one councillor)
The election will be run as a postal vote, and ballot packs will be mailed out by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) between October 4 and 6.
Enrolment for this election closed Friday 26 August 2016. For more information about eligibility and the voting process go to the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) website
New council elections were last conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) on 27 October 2012. For that election Council returned to a ward structure and residents and ratepayers of our district are now represented by three of nine ward councillors, two representing the Anglesea Ward, which includes Aireys Inlet and Fairhaven, and one representing the Lorne Ward, which includes Moggs Creek and Eastern View.
As occurred prior to both the 2012 Council election and the previous election four years earlier, AIDA has provided all candidates for the 2016 election with the opportunity to express their views or position on four questions selected to address key areas of interest to our membership. In this way AIDA aims to provide an even-handed opportunity for our members to understand each candidate’s views on these key matters, and to compare them with those of other candidates. At no stage prior to the election will AIDA recommend or publicly favour any individual candidate. Once the candidates responses have been collated, AIDA will circulate the answers to the Council candidates’ questionnaire to our members by email or post.
In 2012 there was only one vacancy and one candidate in the Lorne Ward, and Clive Goldsworthy was the new councillor. Libby Coker and Margot Smith were elected to represent the Anglesea Ward. The successful candidates in the other wards were as follows:
Torquay Ward – David Bell, Eve Fisher, Rose Hodge, Brian McKiterick
Winchelsea Ward – Rod Nockles, Heather Wellington

This photo, taken at the 2012 AIDA AGM after the formalities had been completed, shows AIDA members talking with local Surf Coast Shire councillor Libby Coker (second from right, front row). Libby was re-elected to council in the 2012 elections and served as the first Mayor of the new council. The current Mayor is Rose Hodge.
